First Avenue Tickets
It was quite the 4th of July weekend for First Avenue. The Hold Steady took over the main room Sunday night (in addition to their Cabooze show on Saturday). And First Avenue celebrated the grand opening of the Depot, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Their new sign is a little big I think - it takes the focus away from First Avenue's stars with its mammoth Depot sign. You can't miss it though!
Speaking of First Avenue's stars they are officially going back up. They have all been painted, now they are just waiting for their names. A lot of thought has went into who will be put on the stars this time around. First Avenue is getting rid of the bands no one can really remember and most importantly are giving the Replacements a more prominent spot. I was really glad to hear that the Replacements star will be going right by the 7th Street Entry! It won't be up at the top of the building anymore. That star should be eye level - it's the most important one!
As a standard protocol First Avenue repaints their building once every ten years. I know when the stars first came down a few weeks ago people flipped out. "Where are the stars?" everyone asked. I must admit, while waiting in line for the Black Keys show I was baffled at how different the building looked without them - it's goo to have them back.
And while you are waiting in line for a show with your First Avenue tickets, stop in the Depot and have a beer. It's a really cool bar. There is no patio, but the walls come up making the whole restaurant basically outside. It's awesome - check it out - and their beer is really cold!

Interpol tickets
When you are supposed to go on the biggest tour of your band's career, say opening for U2 you could pretty much count on a summer of a lifetime. However, when Bono and breaks his back and the tour is canceled you may find yourself with a lot of extra time on your hands. So what can you do? Plan an impromptu late minute summer headlining tour of course!
This is exactly the scenario that happened to poor Interpol. U2 was the hottest ticket of the summer playing in football stadiums to 50,000+ fans. For a band like Interpol, who was asked to open for U2, this is a huge opportunity. It's not every day you are asked to open for Farvin' Bono! But as you know, U2's summer tour was postponed until summer 2011, which left Interpol with a lot of time on their hands ... and an album to promote with no tour! Ahh!
So, in the past few weeks Interpol has announced a string of live shows that will take place late July - early August to promote their new album. This includes a stop in Minneapolis on August 14th at First Avenue. First Avenue tickets are on sale now and First Avenue tickets will sell out for this show! No opening act has been announced yet, but I am sure they will be awesome. I think First Avenue should book local act, The Red Pens, to open the show because they (pardon my french) kick ass.

First Avenue Parking
Have you tried out First Avenue's parking lot yet? I almost did last week for the Wednesday night's Twins game, but they wanted 15 bucks to park there. No, not a crazy price for a Twins game, but still, a lot of money nonetheless - Twins games add up when you go to so many :) But hey, I'm not complaining - Minnesota Twins tickets are quite the commodity these days - I am happy to have the opportunity to go.
In addition to parking, First Avenue has added the Depot. I stopped by the Depot last Wednesday before the Twins game and I must say I was impressed. I did not have time to sample and of the food (which is hard to do anyways because I know inside Target Field there are mass amounts of nachos and cheese curds are waiting to be consumed.
When you have First Avenue tickets I think you may even get to partake in some drink specials on the nights of certain shows. And The Depot is connected to the 7th Street Entry. No more waiting in line outside!

Dead Weather tickets ... and other upcoming shows
Do you have your totally sold out - good luck trying to get on the guest list - Dead Weather tickets? I DO!!! Everyone's favorite (unless you're in the Von Bondies) Jack White will be in town for a show on July 28th. Special guests are (ARE YOU READY FOR THIS) HARLEM. I was so ecstatic when I saw this, it was announced under my concert radar. Harlem was here a few months back and I was super bummed that I missed them (too many concerts not enough time!)
First Avenue tickets for the Dead Weather are totally sold out. There is not a single sold out First Avenue ticket available. You will have to look into other options - First Avenue is not allowed to even have a house list for this one. Only Jack White would say no to the house list!
Man, I am just so excited that Harlem is the opening act. I am not even sure who I am more looking forward to now. If you haven't heard "Friendly Ghost" by Harlem you should youtube that jam for sure!

Jayhawks tickets
Maybe you have read the article already in the Star Tribune, but this weekend is one hell of a weekend for local music. Rock the Garden. The Jayhawks. The Gear Daddies. The Jazz Festival - and lets not forget about Lookbook tonight at First Avenue. If I wasn't checking out The Red Pens at the Hexagon that is where I would be. (Another local band, The Red Pens are simply amazing, I try to make as many of their shows as I can - they are just awesome!)
The Jayhawks headline not one, but three nights this weekend at First Avenue. Saturday night First Avenue tickets are sold out, but there are First Avenue tickets available for Sunday and Monday. The Strangelights and Romantica open Sunday and Monday, respectively. This is the first reunion for the Jayhawks where ALL founding members will be taking place in the show, which is kind of a big deal to Minneapolis music fans.
While I will NOT be at the Jayhawks shows, I will definitely be checking out local band Retribution Gospel Choir at the social event of the season, Rock the Garden. I know, I know, I am sick of hearing about it, too, but come on, it's always a huge deal. The Current is basically throwing a party and Rock the Garden tickets sell out every year. MGMT, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, OK GO and lets not forget that the Barrio taco cart will be there. I really can't tell you what I am more excited for.
Please, the weather will be beautiful this weekend, the Twins are out of town, so do yourself a favor and check out some great local music this weekend. It's out there and you do not have to look far to find it!

First Avenue tickets
It's been a while - and I have a lot to catch up on - not one, but THREE show reviews!
First Avenue tickets for She and Him, Edward Sharpe, and the Black Keys were all in high demand and totally sold out - but this girl right here was at all three of them.
She and Him was first - and very disappointing. I love love M Ward, and really, how can you not be in love with Zoey? Unfortunately the show was so boring I left early to see 'Get Him to the Greek.' After Zoey's 100th rant of the camera flashes I had had enough. You're in a band, on a stage, and an actress on top of that - get over it. People will take your picture, there is nothing you can do about it. M Ward is 100 times better musician and singer than Zoey and he was not give a chance to be in the spotlight very much. M Ward solo show bring it on!
Next up was Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros with Dawes. I hadn't heard too much of Dawes, except what has been played on the radio. Needless to say they by far exceeded my expectations were amazing. I went out the next day and bought their album. Last time Edward Sharpe was at the Varsity Theater they were very disorganized and a tad too immature. However, they have really practiced and gotten their act together. Edward Sharpe was well orchestrated and sounded amazing. It was an amazing show, I can't wait to see them again.
And finally, I attended the Tuesday (the first of two) Black Keys show. The show blew my mind over and over again with each song. "Hey, we're the Black Keys from Akron, Ohio, we're gonna play some new songs and some old ones - lets all have a good time" and then they opened the show with "Thickfreakness" and closed with "Everlasting Light" and "Til I Get My Way." The show was so phenomenal I bought a T-Shirt, which I almost never do these days because I have so many.
First Avenue tickets for all three of these shows were so sold out. I really wanted to go the Wednesday Black Keys, but First Avenue tickets were going for over 100 bucks on Craigs List! Way too much for this concert fan. Man oh man - I can't wait to see them again. Maybe a trip to Ohio this summer is in order.
